“Key Achievements of G20 Summit Under India’s Presidency”

G20 SUMMIT – The Group of Twenty (G20) is the premier forum for international economic cooperation. It plays an important role in shaping and strengthening global architecture and governance on all major international economic issues. India holds the Presidency of the G20 from 1 December 2022 to 30 November 2023.

Group of 20 countries : Argentina , Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, United Kingdom,United States and The Europian Union.
Representing 85 percent of global GDP , over 75 percent of global trade and two thirds of the globe’s entire population.
For this year India hosted G20 summit at New Delhi . In addition to the member countries , each year , the G20 president invites guest countries to participate in the G20 meetings and the summit.

This year ,India has invited Bangladesh, Egypt, Mauritius, The Netherlands, Nigeria, Oman, Singapore, Spain, and The UAE as guest countries during its G20 presidency.
Regular G20 International Organisations: United Nations, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, World Heath Organization, World Trade organization , International Labour Organization, Financial Stability Board, OECD.

Guest International Organisations: International Solar Alliance, Coalition for disaster resilient infrastructure, Asian Development Bank.
Regional Organisations: African Union , African Development Agency – NEPAD ,Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
As India rolls out the red carpet for the G20 Leaders’ Summit, one man who has been omnipresent in the run up- from deliberations to preparations – is Ambitabh Kant , India’s G20 Sherpa. He was appointed to his current role in july last year ,months before India assumed its G20 presidency. The 18th G20 summit that begins on 9-10 september held at Bharat Mandapam International Exhibition -Convention Centre ,Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. The theme for this summit was “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” or “One Earth , One Family, One Future”. The head of 20 states represented their countries but in the absence of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jingping were represented by senior officials: Foriegn Minister Sergey Lavrov from Russia and Chinese Premier Li Qiang respectively.

The Indian presidency spotlighted Lifestyle For Environment (LIFE), with an emphasis on environmentally sustainable and responsible choices at both the individual lifestyle and the national development level, with the aim of achieving a cleaner, greener and bluer future. The summit usually results in a declaration or joint communique to which all members agree. It outlines common positions on matters such as: International conflicts, Climate change -related commitments , the areas of future cooperation and much more.

Some of the key outcomes of the summit are:

• The African Union joined G20 as a permanent member of the grouping.
• A new organisaton i.e. the Global Biofuel Alliance (GBA) was launched with a basic idea of promoting the development and adoption of sustainable biofuels, and set relevant standards and certification.
• The New Delhi Leaders Declaration was adopted with consensus.
• The group of India, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Jordan, Israel, and the EU jointly agreed upon building a rail and shipping corridor linking India with the Middle East and Europe called the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor.
  Other highlights of G20 summit 2023:
• Tripling the Global Renewable Energy Capacity By 2030: G20 countries promised to work towards this. If met, this step could avoid carbon dioxide emissions by 7 billion tones between now and 2030, according to an assessment by the International Energy Agency(IEA).
• Commitment to Global Food Security and Nutrition: They aim to eliminate hunger and malnutrition, they featured the importance of addressing rising commodity prices, including food and energy prices, which contribute to cost-of-living pressures. Read more About g20 Click Here

  Transition of G20 Presidency- PM Narendra Modi handed over the customary gavel of the G20 chair to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva , who will officially take over the presidency on December 1, 2023.
